In the process, lifting PCI girders may induce punter force or buckling that can lead to lateral deflection exceeding standards. This condition can also impact the safety level of the girders' erection process.
Hence, a method to reinforce lateral deflection in PCI girders has been introduced using wing stiffeners. This involves adding sectional area to the PCI girder with additional tools in the form of predetermined-sized steel profiles.
So, what exactly are wing stiffeners in girder construction, and what is their purpose?
What are Wing Stiffeners?
Wing stiffeners are products designed to enhance the rigidity of concrete beams during girder erection. These products are made of a series of steel profiles placed on top of the girder for use during the lifting of concrete beam girders.
The steel components are made segmentally and assembled into a longitudinal unit, placed on the concrete beam girder to increase rigidity during the lifting process.
This method consists of three stages:
- Installation of stiffeners (preparation of tools and materials, assembly, installation of stiffener segments 1-3, and connecting segments 2 and 3 to segment 1).
- Loading test of wing stiffeners and lateral deformation (checking UPV, installation of lifting frame, checking camber and lateral deformation, lifting PC-I Girder).
- Girder erection implementation (preparation, tool box meeting, and erection).
With this method, the results show an increase in the moment of inertia of PCI girders and can enhance optimal torque resistance by 269%.
Wing stiffeners are commonly used in road construction, bridge construction, and building construction that prioritizes high demands on quality control and construction safety.
Projects utilizing this technology include the Cimanggis-Cibitung Toll Road, Cibitung-Cilincing Toll Road, Kayu Agung – Palembang – Betung Toll Road and Krian-Legundi-Bunder-Manyar Toll Road.
Advantages of Using Wing Stiffeners
Here are some important advantages to using wing stiffeners:
- Lateral Load Resistance. One of the main roles of wing stiffeners is to withstand lateral loads that can affect girder stability. With wing stiffeners, girders gain additional strength to resist side pressure, wind, or earthquakes that may impact the structure.
- Reduced Deformation. Wing stiffeners help reduce girder deformation caused by heavy loads. By minimizing deformation, the girder structure can maintain its ideal shape, ensuring the safety and stability of the construction project.
Types of Wing Stiffeners in Girder Construction
Wing stiffeners come in various forms and configurations, depending on the needs and design of the girder construction structure. Some common types include:
- Lateral Stiffeners : Placed on the sides of girders, lateral stiffeners are designed to resist lateral pressure, maintain girder shape, and reduce deformation from lateral loads.
- Vertical Stiffeners : Positioned vertically along the girder, vertical stiffeners bear vertical loads, ensuring stability and strength against gravitational forces.
- Diagonal Stiffeners : Featuring a diagonal shape, diagonal stiffeners are placed to address diagonal loads that may occur on girders. They help reduce deformation and prevent potential structural failure.
